Update on the Spring Session

We have two busy Flight Clubs sessions this spring and each group is split into two groups. While two group are actively working on a project that involves following flight paths, the other two are simply having fun getting their hands on the sky controller so that they can fly the drone in fun spots around our building.

Here's a few shots of some of our third grade girls outside flying and observing!

look just to the left of the group-- see Orca (the drone)?!

Collaboration with the High School

Hi Families!

Today 7 members of the flight club had a unique opportunity to go to the high school to meet Mr. Pitman, the technology education teacher. Mr. Pitman and his students are using the CVC machine to create a way for YES students to safely transport our drones. It's a really cool collaboration project and we feel lucky to have them help us! While we were visiting, the students got to see the neat things happening in the high school tech room, including the robots being created and the 3D printers.

While we were there, we also planned for another collaboration project. A few flight club members will be heading to the high school during spirit week to fly the drone to photograph all the students in our school colors in the gym. Mr. Abbott tested it out for us and we are certainly feeling excited about getting there in a few weeks to have our own club members fly to help with this project!

Outdoor Drone Videos

We had our first chances to fly the Bebop drones outside. Here are some videos from our YouTube channel:

"Open Drone Time"

On Thursdays and Fridays, Flight Club students are able to pop into Mr. Abbott's or Mrs. Fier's room to practice their flight skills with our Blade Nano QX drones. These small drones are difficult to fly and take concentration and a lot of practice in order to feel confident. We are learning though, that with some patience and help from more experienced flyers, we can all do it with finesse!

Here are two of the 3 pilots that came in today to try it out!

Week 2 - Unboxing the Bebop 2 Drones

The second session of the YES Flight Club was the reveal and unboxing of the second drone.

Mr. Abbott demonstrates flying the drone indoors. We couldn't go outside as there were 20-30 mph gusts of wind on the playground.

Day 1 - Meet and Greet the members of the YES Flight Club

The STEM Lab was humming with 3rd and 4th graders eating lunches, meeting classmates and wondering what it meant to be a part of the inaugural YES "Flight Club". Videos from the Parrot Bebop 2 list on YouTube were playing in the background as we shared names, drone experiences and ideas for using the new drones (which hadn't yet arrived).

Thanks to the Yarmouth Education Foundation for the generous funding of this new way to look at geography, navigation and the chance to create aerial video.
